Five Foods for Eating Your Way to Flawless Skin

In today's fast paced, over processed world of eating, we often let convenience take over our nutrition regimen. However, if we stop rushing for a moment to truly consider what we're putting into our bodies, is it really worth it? Beauty products can go a long way, but what we eat also has a huge impact on our outer glow and complexion. Clearer, brighter, more vibrant skin may be only a few small diet swaps away with these foods!

Foods rich in Vitamin A. Low-Fat dairy products like certain yogurts contain retinoids (forms of retinol) that help to prevent oil and dead skin cells from clogging pores.

Foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Foods with essential fatty acids like salmon, walnuts, and canola oil ensure that cell membranes, the barriers responsible for bringing in nutrients to the cells while also excreting waste, are functioning properly. When cell membranes are healthy, they become stronger and are able to hold in more moisture giving you a plum, youthful glow. You can also try adding flaxseed to a fresh fruit smoothie as a simple way to boost your omega-3s.

Selenium rich foods. Proven to help maintain skin’s elasticity and reduce inflammation, selenium plays a vital role in the health of skin cells. Try adding foods like tuna, sunflower seeds, whole grains, and Brazil nuts to boost selenium levels.

Foods with natural antioxidants. We've all heard about the power of antioxidants, but how exactly do they work? Here's one example: foods high in the antioxidant lycopene, like tomatoes, help fight off free radicals (highly reactive groups of atoms, which can cause damage to cellular structures and DNA). Other antioxidant rich sources are grapes, blueberries, and green tea.

Vitamin C filled fruits and veggiesNot only does Vitamin C have powerful anti-oxidative properties, but it also is essential for elastin and collagen production (the cellular components that maintain the firmness and structure of skin cells). Some of our Vitamin C favorites are avocados, melons, oranges, and berries.

So, the next time you make your shopping list, be sure it includes some of these skin perfecting foods. And of course, a SPAtacular facial every now and then doesn't hurt either! =)
